What Does the DOR Do?

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has a division called the Child Support Enforcement Division (DOR/CSED). The DOR/CSED has the authority to seek child support orders on behalf of custodial parents, at their request or, if the custodial parent receives public assistance, at the request of the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA, that is, welfare).

DOR/CSED can provide other child support enforcement services upon request of the custodial parent or the DTA. DOR/CSED can:

  • help locate the other parent
  • establish paternity for a child born to parents who are not married to each other
  • review a child support order for possible modification (increases or decreases)
  • seek modification of a child support order
  • enforce a child support order: by filing a complaint for contempt against a parent who is not obeying a child support order; by levying against that parent's bank account; by taking action to have that parent's driver's license or professional license suspended, revoked, not issued, or not renewed.
  • collect past due child support (arrears)
